Battling Disinformation: Social Media’s Dark Side

As I sat down with Sarah Mitchell, a seasoned digital security analyst boasting over a decade of experience in the tech industry, her composed demeanor offered a stark contrast to the urgency of our discussion. The UK currently lacks a minister for youth, which is a missed opportunity to engage younger generations in tackling these issues.”

Recognizing the need for change, the new Labour government in the UK has pledged to review the curriculum in primary and secondary schools to integrate critical thinking across multiple subjects. “Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has underscored the importance of equipping young people with the skills to critically assess what they encounter online,” Sarah said.

Critical thinking is indispensable in an age where AI can inadvertently amplify falsehoods and illegal content. “We must equip everyone with the tools to distinguish rogue disinformation from authentic, reliable information,” Sarah stressed. “This includes providing access to resources that help both school children and adults navigate the digital landscape.”
